Bocca di Serchio

Published on April 2, 2022 2 min read

The Serchio is the third longest river of Tuscany at 126 km. It's the second by rate of flow, surpassed only by Arno river.

Serchio river has been importan for agriculture and transport since roman times and has been quoted in many pieces of poetry including Dante's Divina Commedia.

The principal source of the river is on the slopes os Monte Siliano, elevation 1864 meters, and it crosses Garfagnana, Serchio Middle Valley and the plain of Lucca before entering the province of Pisa and discharging in the Tyrrenian Sea in the Park of Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli, just north of San Rossore proper.

This area, known as Bocca di Serchio (Serchio's mouth), will be the object of this post.

Those pictures were take at the end of summer 2021. As you can see, many people keeps their boat on the river during the good season, for navigating and/or fishing. The mouth of the river lies just a couple of km downstream.

The river kiss the sea: a place of astounding beauty.

The beach is, unfortunately, neither clean nor well kept. It's a shame, becuase a lot of people enjoy this place. It should be cleaner, considering as well that is part of a Park.

During Thirties years of XX century, toghether with San Rossore's La Casermetta, this was the training area of X Flottiglia MAS and the experimetal ground for manned torpedoes. The numerous raids executed by Italian Navy against British Navy during Second World War were born in this place.

That' all for now, I hope you did enjoy.
